SUMMARY:New Opportunities to Partner with NRCS for Source Water Protection and Climate-Smart Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:New Opportunities to Partner with NRCS for Source Water Protection and Climate-Smart Agriculture hosted by the Source Water Collaborative (SWC).  This webinar will focus on this year’s opportunity to update the USDA NRCS high priority source water protection areas and agricultural and forestry practices landowners can implement to get up to 90 percent incentive payments to protect drinking water sources under the Farm Bill. The webinar will also address the selection/update of watersheds under the National Water Quality Initiative (NWQI) and Mississippi River Basin Initiative (MRBI). In addition\, participants will learn about a drinking water utility’s successful experience working with NRCS State Technical Committees and NRCS staff. register here

SUMMARY:ECHO Biosolids Facility Searches and Reports Training
DESCRIPTION:This training hosted by USEPA focuses on the ECHO Facility Searches and Report under the Clean Water Act (CWA) National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program area biosolids. With the implementation of the NPDES Electronic Reporting Rule (eRule)\, facilities in the 41 states where EPA implements the Federal Biosolids Program\, and three authorized states (SD\, TX\, UT) began submitting electronic reports. This training provides an overview of the electronic reporting of biosolids annual reports\, describes the biosolids data available on EPA’s Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO)\, and includes a demonstration of navigating the Biosolids Facility and Annual Report search form\, search results\, and Biosolids Facility Report.\n**If you need any special accommodations for this webinar\, please email Madeline LaPatra (lapatra.madeline@epa.gov).\nClick here to learn more and register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Choose Native Mini-Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Community members\, volunteers\, and interested professionals are invited to join Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Penn State Extension for this virtual mini-workshop focused on replacing invasive species with those native to Pennsylvania in landscapes and water gardens. Landscaping and water gardening activities often lead to the unintended introduction and spread of invasive plant species to our natural lands and waterways. Once established\, invasive species can degrade natural habitats by outcompeting native species for space\, light\, and nutrients. Invasive species can impact the food web by altering the plant community and decreasing the diversity of plants available for food sources\, habitat\, and shelter. Preventing invasive plant introductions by utilizing native alternatives in landscapes and water gardens is a viable solution. This Choose Native mini-workshop will introduce participants to native species options and creative ways to include native species in landscapes and aquatic designs. Click here to learn more and register\nWho is this for? \nProperty owners\nLandscapers\nThose wanting to learn more about invasive and native plants\nNative plant enthusiasts \nWhat will you learn? \nThe importance of Pennsylvania native species\nImpacts of invasive species in the built environment Ideas for utilizing native plants in the landscape\nManaging native species in landscapes and water gardens \nThis mini-workshop is hosted by Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Penn State Extension with a special guest presentation by Native Creations Landscaping Services.\nThis event is being offered at no charge to participants thanks to funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Great Lakes Commission.\nClick here to learn more and register

SUMMARY:Small Drinking Water Systems Webinar Series: Harmful Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Establishing an Algal Toxin Rule and Regulatory Program in\nRhode Island\, an Informal Case Study\nShannon Harrower-Nakama\, Rhode Island Department of Health\nIn 2019\, Rhode Island was one of the earliest states to establish a HAB/cyanotoxin rule in the state public drinking water regulations\, which also required the development of surrounding program infrastructure. This  presentation will serve as a brief\, small-scale case study of a state-level Algal Toxin program from its inception onward\, including topics such as an overview of the rule’s regulatory language\, toxin selection and health  limits\, implementation\, challenges\, and other resources/information.\nInsights on HAB Dynamics in Urban Lakes and an Introduction to\nBenthic Sample Preparation\nHeath Mash and Toby Sanan\, EPA Office of Research and Development\nHABs in recreational and drinking water sources can cause adverse health effects in humans and animals but are understudied in the urban environment. This presentation discusses the investigation of urban lakes in three metropolitan areas to determine if there are parameters that are unique to these lakes and investigate the correlation between urban watershed characteristics and cyanobacterial HABs.\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_CKP-COkmSHGy3-6SeOYSAQ#/registration

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: What You Need to Know About Microplastics in Our Waters
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\nMicroplastics are emerging contaminants in the water environment. These manufactured polymer particles have been found across water matrices\, capturing the attention of consumers and regulators\, raising questions about potential human and ecosystem hazards. A major challenge for understanding microplastic fate and transport is that these are complex particle mixtures of varying size and shape. Join us to learn the latest about this a hot topic! This webinar will provide updates on the regulatory landscape\, consumer knowledge and attitudes about microplastics in their drinking water\, what you need to know about sampling and analytical options\, and what we know about microplastic sources and occurrence across water matrices.\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\nDescribe current and pending legislation\, consumer knowledge and attitudes.\nRecognize microplastic monitoring challenges and how to interpret/compare studies in the MP literature.\nCompare microplastic concentrations and characteristics in wastewater\, stormwater\, and surface water.\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Choose Native Workshop for Landscape Professionals - Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Calling all Landscape Professionals!\nProfessional landscapers and water gardeners are invited to register for one of three regional workshops provided by Pennsylvania Sea Grant\, Penn State Extension\, and regional partners focused on replacing invasive species with those native to Pennsylvania\, in landscaping and water gardens. The March 2024 “Choose Native” workshops are free and continuing education credits are available. The Philadelphia event on March 7 will be hosted at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. Register by February 5th!\nLandscaping and water gardening activities often lead to the unintended introduction and spread of invasive plant species to our land and waterways. Once established\, invasive species can degrade natural habitats by outcompeting native species for space\, light\, and nutrients. Invasive species can impact the food web by altering the plant community and decreasing the diversity of plants available for food sources\, habitat\, and shelter.\nPreventing invasive plant introductions by utilizing native alternatives in landscaping and water gardening is a viable solution. The Choose Native workshops will introduce participants to the native species options\, creative ways to include native species\, management strategies for existing invasive species\, and creating a management plan for native species in landscapes and water gardens.\nJoin this workshop to \nLearn about native alternatives to commonly planted invasive and ornamental species\nLearn about using native plants for landscapes and aquatic spaces\nCreate a mock management plan for native and invasive species on your properties\nObtain continuing education credits \nAttendees are eligible for: \n15% discount for Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional Level 1 Course\nInternational Society of Arboriculture Credits\nPDA Certified Pesticide Applicator Recertification Credits\nChesapeake Bay Landscape Professional CEUs\nSustainable Landscape Certification CEUs\nPennsylvania Certified Horticulturist CEUs \nClick here to learn more and register! The workshops are being offered thanks to support of funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation.
