Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production Grants

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on May 6th, 2020 the availability of $3 million for grants through its new Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production. The competitive grants will support the development of urban agriculture and innovative production projects through two categories: 

  • Planning Projects ($1 million for projects that initiate or expand efforts of farmers, gardeners, citizens, government officials, schools and other stakeholders in urban areas and suburbs.)
  • Implementation Projects ($2 million for projects that accelerate existing and emerging models of urban, indoor and other agricultural practices that serve multiple farmers.)

NEP Coastal Watersheds Grant Program

The National Estuaries Program's Coastal Watersheds Grants are part of a nationally competitive program designed to support projects that address urgent and challenging issues threatening the well-being of coastal and estuarine areas within determined estuaries of national significance. Congressionally-set project priorities include loss of key habitats, harmful algal blooms, invasive species, flooding and coastal erosion, nutrient and warm water impacts, and contaminants of emerging concern. Agricultural Research Projects

The Department of Agriculture (Department) is soliciting applications to conduct agricultural research on one or more of the following research topic areas, with the research to be conducted from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020 and a possible extension into future years. Some topics include: various multiyear research projects, climate adaptation and mitigation, spotted lanternfly, conservation BMPs, the PA Pollinator Protection Plan, dairy product research, blockchain technology, industrial hemp, workforce development, urban agriculture, pesticide impacts, noxious weeds, etc. Interested applicants must submit a complete electronic research project proposal and grant application at https://www.esa.dced.state.pa.us/Login.aspx by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019. Lancaster Clean Water Fund

In 2020, the Lancaster Clean Water Fund will provide $128,000 for water quality improvement projects that help Lancaster achieve the specific pollutant reductions (mainly nutrient and phosphorus) by 2025 in accordance with the Lancaster Countywide Action Plan. Grants will be awarded through the Community Grant Fund (up to $5,000) for small-scale projects or the Water Quality Impact Fund ($10,000-$50,000) for large-scale, high-priority restoration projects. Examples include streambank stabilization, turf to meadow projects, riparian forest buffers, community tree plantings, green infrastructure, environmental education, removal of impervious surfaces, and ecological restoration.

Valley Creek Watershed Grant Program

The Valley Creek Trustee Council, comprised of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the National Park Service, oversees a grant program to provide funding for restoration of the Valley Creek Watershed in Chester County, PA. The goal of this funding is to improve trout habitat and angler access through implementation of projects related to stormwater management, stream channel stabilization, establishment of greenways via easements or land purchase, increased public access to streams, and/or brook trout restoration in Crabby Creek. If you have questions, please contact the grant administrator Jeff Schmid at  jschmid@pa.gov
