Agricultural Research Projects
The Department of Agriculture (Department) is soliciting applications to conduct agricultural research on one or more of the following research topic areas, with the research to be conducted from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020 and a possible extension into future years. Some topics include: various multiyear research projects, climate adaptation and mitigation, spotted lanternfly, conservation BMPs, the PA Pollinator Protection Plan, dairy product research, blockchain technology, industrial hemp, workforce development, urban agriculture, pesticide impacts, noxious weeds, etc. Interested applicants must submit a complete electronic research project proposal and grant application at https://www.esa.dced.state.pa.us/Login.aspx by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019. Multi-functional Riparian Buffer Sub-Grant Program
Pennsylvania’s conservation districts are encouraged to apply for funding to install multi-functional buffers (A riparian forest buffer that provides opportunities for harvesting products such as nuts, berries, woody florals, forbs, and potentially woody biomass) in conjunction with landowners. Lancaster Clean Water Fund
In 2020, the Lancaster Clean Water Fund will provide $128,000 for water quality improvement projects that help Lancaster achieve the specific pollutant reductions (mainly nutrient and phosphorus) by 2025 in accordance with the Lancaster Countywide Action Plan. Grants will be awarded through the Community Grant Fund (up to $5,000) for small-scale projects or the Water Quality Impact Fund ($10,000-$50,000) for large-scale, high-priority restoration projects. Examples include streambank stabilization, turf to meadow projects, riparian forest buffers, community tree plantings, green infrastructure, environmental education, removal of impervious surfaces, and ecological restoration. AML/AMD Reclamation Awards
The Eastern PA Coalition of Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR) and the Anthracite Region Independent Power Producer’s Association (ARIPPA) are offering competitive awards to watershed organizations working on Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) and/or Abandoned Mine Drainage (AMD) remediation projects in the Anthracite and Bituminous Regions of PA. The awards distributed in 2020 will total $5,000 statewide. The ARIPPA AML/AMD Reclamation Awards are designed to help environmental organizations and Conservation Districts secure extra match and leverage additional funds. Grant proposals should be for “on-the-ground” AML/AMD construction projects with a completion date between one year earlier than the deadline and one year later. The amount granted is dependent upon demonstrated need. Applying organizations must support the mission of ARIPPA, including the removal and conversion of coal refuse into alternative energy and the beneficial use of CFB ash for AML/AMD reclamation purposes. The National Estuaries Program's Coastal Watersheds Grants are part of a nationally competitive program designed to support projects that address urgent and challenging issues threatening the well-being of coastal and estuarine areas within determined estuaries of national significance. The federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) is now offering grants for acid mine drainage treatment through the Watershed Cooperative Agreement Program to not-for-profit 501(c)3 entities. WCAP is designed to be partnered with other funding sources to assist groups such as small watershed organizations to complete local AMD reclamation projects.
