State Wildlife Grant Program

Funds for the State Wildlife Grants program (SWG) are provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to keep species from becoming federally listed as threatened or endangered. Annually appropriated by the U.S. Congress, Pennsylvania's funds are apportioned between the Fish and Boat Commission and Game Commission to address each agencies' trust species and habitats. The priority topic for the project will help support Pennsylvania's amphibian and reptile Species of Greatest Conservation Need found in the 2015-2025 Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan.

Stormwater Management Incentives Program

SMIP projects are evaluated based on a variety of criteria, including total volume of stormwater managed, cost competitiveness and other environmental and educational benefits. Competitive applications will limit grant requests to $100,000 or less per impervious acre and manage at least the first 1” of runoff. Payments may not exceed the actual cost for the design and installation of the project. Applicants must be the property owner, PWD customer or tenant with permission from the property owner.

The State Environmental Justice Cooperative Agreement Program

EPA anticipates making five awards in amounts of up to $200,000 per award for a two-year project period. EPA encourages applicants to develop innovative plans and processes to conduct effective outreach to underserved communities in the midst of social-distancing and local stay-at-home orders, especially in places where internet access may not be readily available to all residents.

Tulpehocken & Quittapahilla Watershed Grant Program

Tulpehocken and Quittapahilla Creek Watershed grants are given for stream restoration, habitat enhancement, and recreational enhancement activities on streams located in the Tulpehocken and Quittapahilla Creek watersheds. The monies can be used for stand-alone projects or to supplement other funding for larger projects that are designed to improve aquatic habitat, water quality, or recreational use. Examples of acceptable activities include: fishery habitat restoration or enhancement; fish stocking; fishing access; maintenance or creation of facilities to encourage, improve or expand recreational use of the fishery; or studies related to these issues.

Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production Grants

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on May 6th, 2020 the availability of $3 million for grants through its new Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production. The competitive grants will support the development of urban agriculture and innovative production projects through two categories: 

  • Planning Projects ($1 million for projects that initiate or expand efforts of farmers, gardeners, citizens, government officials, schools and other stakeholders in urban areas and suburbs.)
  • Implementation Projects ($2 million for projects that accelerate existing and emerging models of urban, indoor and other agricultural practices that serve multiple farmers.)

Valley Creek Watershed Grant Program

The Valley Creek Trustee Council, comprised of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the National Park Service, oversees a grant program to provide funding for restoration of the Valley Creek Watershed in Chester County, PA. The goal of this funding is to improve trout habitat and angler access through implementation of projects related to stormwater management, stream channel stabilization, establishment of greenways via easements or land purchase, increased public access to streams, and/or brook trout restoration in Crabby Creek. If you have questions, please contact the grant administrator Jeff Schmid at  jschmid@pa.gov.

Watershed Restoration and Protection Program

The overall goal of the Watershed Restoration and Protection Program (WRPP) is to restore, and maintain restored stream reaches impaired by the uncontrolled discharge of nonpoint source polluted runoff, and ultimately to remove these streams from the Department of Environmental Protection’s Impaired Waters list. Projects which involve the construction, improvement, expansion, repair, maintenance or rehabilitation of new or existing watershed protection Best Management Practices (BMPs).
