Schuylkill Scrub: History

back to overview

History of the Schuylkill Scrub

In 2009, the need for a more cooperative watershed based approach to solve the problem of litter and illegal dumping was identified by the Hopewell Big Woods Partnership (Hay and French Creek Watersheds). This need was addressed by promoting and encouraging more groups, and an increased diversity of types of groups (civic, business, youth, non-profit), to participate in local cleanup events and submit cleanup data, through the collaborative effort known as the Schuylkill Scrub.

In 2015, the Schuylkill Action Network, coordinator of the Schuylkill Scrub, partnered with Keep PA Beautiful to improve and expand the statewide collaborative cleanup effort, called Pick Up Pennsylvania. Now, groups that register with the Schuylkill Scrub will register through Pick Up Pennsylvania. Trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and free or reduced trash pickup is available for groups through PennDOT’s Keep America Beautiful program and private landfill sponsored Pick It Up PA Days program.

The Schuylkill Scrub is now…

  • More effective with planned activity to positively affect the Schuylkill Watershed!
  • More visible featuring collaborative promotions before and during the Schuylkill Scrub!
  • More accountable with an organized effort, designating specific areas to specific groups!
