Despite the growing concern of the occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and pesticides in drinking water in the United States, there is limited focus on private wells despite serving over 13 million people in the US and approximately 26% of the population in Pennsylvania. Many CECs are endocrine disruptors that have potential to cause human and/or ecological health effects at trace-level concentrations. This study evaluated potential links between occurrence of CECs in drinking water from private wells and corresponding toxicological impacts. By partnering with the Pennsylvania Master Well Owner Network (MWON), water samples were collected from 70 private wells across PA and analyzed for a suite of PFAS, PPCPs, and pesticides. To assess the potential ecological and human-health impacts of the detected compounds a wide range of cell-based bioassays as well as exposure-activity ratio (EAR) and Toxicological Prioritization index (ToxPi) was used prioritizing CECs, sites, and hazard concerns in these water samples.
